Arrival & Finding the Door

Onetai is reached via a peaceful rural road, surrounded by native bush.

You will first see a sign reading Onetai Estate on the left side of the road

(keep your eyes peeled — it’s easy to miss while admiring the forest)

Continue up the driveway toward the main residence. Look for the ‘Steve’s House’ sign—it will lead you directly to our stained-glass entry.

Simply knock, and your stay begins. We will greet you there whenever possible.

Tip: We recommend downloading maps offline before arriving, as mobile signal can drop in the valley.

2

Your Space & Shared Areas

Guests have access to:

Their private room

Shared lounge and dining spaces

Outdoor seating areas and gardens

Gentle bush-edge tracks surrounding the estate

Onetai is a peaceful shared sanctuary — we ask guests to move gently through communal spaces and respect the quiet of the land.

3

Winter Warmth & Summer Ease

Onetai is designed for comfort across the seasons.

In winter:

Underfloor heating warms the house

In the cooler months, fires are prepared and lit to anchor the evening in warmth—perfect for a slow glass of wine or a book in the lounge.

Blankets are always waiting in the lounge for guests to snuggle into

In summer:

The house remains naturally cool and airy beneath the trees.

Windows open onto birdsong and soft valley breeze

(no air-conditioning is needed here — nature regulates the temperature)

4

Kitchen Use

Guests are welcome to use the kitchen at any time. We invite you to help yourself to the herb garden, the orchard, and our selection of kitchen spices and staples.

We simply ask that you respect the private larder (fridge and freezer stock), as these are reserved for our private use.

To maintain the sanctuary’s flow, please keep shared surfaces clear and place used items in the dishwasher. If it happens to be full, starting a cycle ensures the next guest finds the kitchen as ready for use as you did.

Thank you for helping keep shared spaces seamless for everyone.

5

Everything Is Here (Travel Light)

Onetai is set up so you don’t need to overpack. We provide thoughtful essentials such as:

Fresh towels and linens

Hairdryer

Tea, coffee, and hot chocolate

Cooking basics & kitchen staples

Insect repellent & spray

 Gentle lighting and shared comforts

If you’re wondering about a specific item, just message us — we’re happy to help.

6

Rubbish, Recycling & Compost
(Caring for the Land)

We care deeply about dealing with waste responsibly, so we’ve made it easy:

Recycling bins are clearly labelled with what goes where

A food compost is tucked quietly in the garden, returning nourishment back to the land

Thank you for supporting the estate’s rhythm of care.

7

Bathroom & Septic Awareness

To protect the estate’s systems, we kindly ask:

Toilet paper only in the toilet

No wipes (even “flushable” ones)

Bins are provided beside the loo for feminine hygiene and wipes.

Showers can be of any length — just keep in mind that when large groups are present, hot water has a natural limit and may need time to reheat.

8

Spa & Outdoor Sanctuary

The spa is available for guest use at any time, and is especially beautiful beneath the open sky.

Spa guidelines:

-Please shower before use

-No glass in or around the spa

-Replace the cover after use to keep it warm for the next soak

To ensure the peace and safety of all our guests, we ask that younger explorers are always accompanied while enjoying the water.

Quiet hours begin after 10pm, though spa use is still welcome if kept gentle

9

Outdoor Lighting & Stargazing

Soft outdoor lighting remains on at night so guests can wander the grounds safely without needing phone torches.

If you prefer darker skies, we can reduce lighting on request.

Even with lights on, Onetai offers more stars than most dark sky reserves.

As the valley settles into full darkness, we invite you to take a quiet wander down the driveway; the banks often come alive with the soft, bioluminescent glow of our local glowworms.

Biosecurity & Clean Shoes (Protecting the Bush)

Onetai borders protected native forest.

If you plan to explore the tracks, we kindly ask footwear is clean of soil before arrival to help prevent the spread of forest diseases such as kauri dieback.

Thank you for moving gently through the valley.

Nature’s Residents

Because Onetai is surrounded by 22 acres of native bush, nature does like to say hello now and then.

To keep your room serene, we recommend closing windows before dusk to keep seasonal moths and evening visitors outside.

For your comfort, insect repellent and spray are provided in the house should you need them.

11

Parking & Transport

Having a vehicle is strongly recommended, as there is no public transport servicing Onetai Estate.

Local guiding or driving assistance can also be arranged in advance if desired.

13
